What is hydrotherapy?
Hydrotherapy is a therapy using water. It has many beneficial actions such as:
- Strengthening the immune system by increasing the white blood cell count which helps to fight infection and inflammation.
- Increasing circulation and the metabolism in the organs.
- Increasing oxygen content in the blood.
- Detoxification
- It also helps to regulate blood sugar and blood pressure.
The treatment
The treatment consists of alternating hot and cold towels while using electrical stimulation. It lasts 45-50 minutes.
The patient first lays face up and 2 hot and wet towels are applied to the torso then covered with a wool blanket. These are left in place for 5 minutes. Then a new set of hot towels are applied followed immediately by cold ones, covered again by the wool blanket. It will last for 10 minutes. During this phase, electric stimulation will be applied to the upper spine. It will feel like a tingling sensation.
After this period, a dry towel will follow and the electrodes will be repositioned. One will be moved to the center of the lower back and the other one will be placed in the upper abdominal area. This will also last for 10 minutes.
The patient will then turn facing down and the process will be repeated to the back. At the end of the session, the back with be frictioned with a cold wet washcloth.
When should hydrotherapy be utilized?
In chronic and acute conditions such as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, Lyme's disease, cold/flu, IBS, depression, pms, hypothyroidism, etc... whenever the immune system is affected or simply to rejuvenate one self.
How many treatments are needed?
It depends on the condition, it can vary from 1-2 times a week to 1 every other week.
